  • Boarding School  ( 78 items )

How many times have you watched GOODBYE MR. CHIPS? Even the musical version? Are you a fan of TOM BROWN'S SCHOOL DAYS or BRIDESHEAD REVISITED? So many wonderful tales have been woven from boarding school memories of writers and filmmakers over the years. It is a rich culture of privilege and academia that maintains its status as the height of education for under-18 students all over the world. Whether it's London or Rome or New York City, boarding schools offer excellent careers and a tradition of excellence and success that few other types of schools can match across the globe.

Private schools demand high marks of excellence from their teachers as well as their students. These boarding programs employ a very intense scrutinization of their potential teachers--they want to know that your educational background is impeccable, that you do not have any criminal record or otherwise difficult social relations, that you will be an upstanding member of the community in all ways. A background in education and advanced degrees will help you find a home at a good boarding school. Of course, since students board here, they also require personnel that can take care of their clients--cooks, resident assistants and managers, doctors and nurses to be on the premises, equestrian and sports directors, janitors and repairmen.

Of course, some of these schools are located in beautiful places--they are built on acres of mostly donated property, in places like abandoned castles or tony family homes that have been passed on from later generations and given in perpetuity to the school programmers. Boarding schools not only employ excellent teachers but also maintenance consultants of all types: equine, agricultural and landscaping, transportation and communications. A good boarding school operates like a small corporation and needs top-notch personnel of all types. You could be one of the important cogs in this privileged machine.

  • Eastern United States  ( 58 items )

Boston. Providence. New York. Philadelphia. Richmond. Washington, DC. Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill. Atlanta. Columbia. Miami. The major cities on the eastern coast of the United States are considered major by other nations around the world, as well as other states in the U.S. The diversity of cultures, leisure activities, education, industry and opportunity are as vast and widespread as the U.S. itself. Jobs abound, even in bad times, because there are so many giant corporations housed on this coast. If you're looking for a good place to live and work in the U.S., the eastern shores offer nothing but excitement and possibility.

Of all these cities, all of them major players when it comes to work, education and lifestyle, there is one whose might, power and history trump the others--New York City. The five boroughs of NYC--Manhattan, the Bronx, Staten Island, Brooklyn and Queens--are a microcosm of the entire world. People come from the far corners of the earth to make their mark in the Big Apple. It is a major thoroughfare for shipping and entertainment, for banking and publishing--there's nothing that isn't represented by New York City's 24-square miles! But it's not the only big city on the East Coast to haul in a major population and major opportunities. Boston is one of the oldest cities in the U.S. and is the gateway to the farthest north reaches of New England.

Home to some of the finest academic institutions in the world (Harvard, MIT, Boston University), Boston and its environs actually boast the highest number of outstanding colleges and universities in the United States. And it has some of the most beautiful shoreline and islands in the world at its coast--the whole of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, once the summer vacation destination of President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton. There's Plymouth Rock right outside Boston and the center of Boston is American History central--follow the Freedom Trail to walk the paths of Paul Revere's ride, for example.

Any of these cities offers major opportunities. Banking, publishing, sports, entertainment, medicine (the Center for Disease Control is harbored in Atlanta, Georgia), industry--you can't think of one mode of gainful modern employment that isn't represented intensely in any of these large cities. Granted, that means there will be more people trying to gain access to these positions but, with this site to guide you, your perfect job is out there. And when you're done, you can hit the Jersey shore, Cape Cod, the Gullah Islands, the Outer Banks or South Beach, Miami, Florida, to relax, enjoy some of the greatest waters in the Atlantic and unwind from your big-city dealings. The East Coast has a lot of everything to offer and somewhere in there is your perfect job and the start of an excit

  • North West United States  ( 39 items )

San Francisco, Portland, Seattle. The supertech trio. The most technically-savvy of all the major cosmopolitan areas in the United States, these towns boast amazing schools (UCAL Berkeley, Stanford, University of Washington, Reed College) in bucolic settings--massive trees create forests that seem to go on forever (or high into the sky, at least, if you're talking about California sequoias)--and the major giants of today's supertech world at its center--Microsoft, Apple, Skywalker Ranch (where George Lucas has his center of operations). These cities are known for their beautiful waterside appointments, their richly diverse cultural life, their penchant for new thinking and progressive movements, their music and literary history, their beauty and commitment to this beauty but not at the mercy of the environment. They boast some of the most amazing animal life in the U.S. (an entire port of San Francisco has had its docks taken over by sea lions and the city has done nothing but protect them and their right to be there!). Sometimes considered "too granola-y" to be taken seriously, it has been shown that more radical and important medical investigation and research is done in this part of the world than almost any other. In other words, the Northwest is happening!

Living in places that mix the historical with the here and now, these cities represent a plethora of career possibilities. As global warming and climate control continue to take precedence in the concerns of world citizens, these cities offer great opportunity to study and hopefully stop this horrible trend. Scientists and researchers, environmentalists and ecologists, thinkers and doers all, find an easy home here. Academics, writers, musicians, all play a huge part in the giant wheel that keeps these places humming. And, built on a major fault line, these cities also are the center for serious seismological work and meteorological research, since San Francisco has already suffered two massive quakes in the last two centuries. Someone is working on how to build houses that will stand against the natural disasters that are apt to strike and that someone could use your help! So many dreams, so little time--the Northwest is a beautiful background to some of the most exciting opportunities you'll ever find.

  • South Western United States  ( 23 items )

Cowboys, Indians, reservations and rodeos--the Southwest suffers under the burden of some of the most iconographic imagery in all the world. Granted, the mountains and mighty rivers, the vast expanses of desert and sky, the amazing plethora of flora and fauna, provide a truly devastating backdrop to some of the U.S.'s most relaxed and fun-oriented living.

The Southwest U.S. offers the age-old rituals and history of great Central American cultures who came to the U.S. to find greater freedoms from their own oppressive homelands. The agriculture in the Southwest is mixed but the energy is positive and forward-thinking. The influx of Mexicans to America have greatly influenced the whole of American civilization and this bi-lingual country has been able to amalgamate so many useful and fascinating aspects of the culture into U.S. daily life. With Monument Valley, the southwest boasts some of the greatest sets to Hollywood films that have ever come from the natural world. The Rio Grande, one of the world's longest rivers, offers some of the greatest sights as well as white water rafting anywhere. The expanse and breadth of different types of topography, from major national parks like the Grand Canyon to man-made achievements like the Hoover Dam, attest to the remarkable ingenuity and sense of adventure that marks the creation of these states.

Of course, there's always Las Vegas, the glitzy casino capital of the world. But what better antidote to the craziness of Vegas than Taos, New Mexico, where Georgia O'Keefe began painting some of her most iconic works and where there are far more horse farms than anything else. In New Mexico, you can stand in a huge field and look at up mountaintops where it's snowing while it's also raining in another area while it's beautifully sunny in a third direction--all at the same time. Called "The Land of Possibilties," there's no wonder where that name came from once you get there.

The job market in the Southwest is one of the most untraditional--with medical positions on pueblos competing with croupier at a fancy casino. But whatever you're looking for, you're sure to find it here!

  • Southern United States  ( 48 items )

The grace and quiet pace of the South isn't quite what it used to be--if you find yourself in a busy city like Atlanta or Miami or New Orleans, you might just assume you're in a hotter version of New York. The climate is remarkable--sunny with daily, sudden wild storms--while the culture is just as hot--Spanish, French, Israeli, African all mixed into the stew. The gentile world of the post-bellum South has given rise to some of the most aggressive capitalistic growth in the world--Atlanta and Miami now boast major music and film companies, while the Research Triangle in North Carolina's Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area receives most of the grant money available in the country when it comes to scientific research. Technology and entertainment go hand-in-hand in these cities, as the old guard tries to step quickly onto the moving platform of technology and the new guard mixes its cultural heat with modern recording techniques to make Atlanta the center of the hip-hop world. It's a hopeful and exciting sign that the South is finding its way to becoming an industrial superpower on its own--Charlotte has become the go-to town for more corporations than any city but New York.

Yes, southern life is quieter and less brash than it is in other parts of the U.S.--take a look at old Savannah or Charleston and you'll see what I'm talking about. These towns boast an easy-going throwback to the grand old days of real gentlemen and ladies. This South holds some key pieces of the American experience and the beginnings of the trade that marked this continent's arrival into the big leagues of global markets. Regardless of economic opportunity, the South lays claim to great natural beauty as well, the islands of Key West or the varied natural life of the Missisippi Delta. The Mississippi River is one of the grandest and longest rivers in the U.S. and separates the East from the West very distinctly--and carries down its great course trade from Canada all the way to South America. The American South is an important pathway to the global industry that makes the U.S. a key part of the world's economy.

Looking for a job in the South of the U.S. can be "too much"--too much in the way of academia, too much in the way of industry, too much of everything! It is a fervently complex intersection of new and old and offers the adventuring careerperson many possibilities!

  • California  ( 48 items )

The most enduring image of California in the world photo book is the Hollywood sign at the top of the Hollywood Hills overlooking Los Angeles. California is, of course, still and forever the center of the American filmmaking world and, although many places have also beefed up their production capabilities over the years (Hong Kong and Canada included), it is still considered the place to make movies. Every major film studio and distributor has an office in Los Angeles and California is so besotted with the silver screen that they have elected two famous actors to be the governor of their state (Ronald Reagan and, at present, Arnold Schwarzenegger). But this is not the only image of California that creates its world-renowned reputation.

California takes up most of the Pacific coastline and thus is a gateway to North America from the Far East. If you travel through the state in one day, you will go from warm and temperate climes, like those in San Diego or Los Angeles, through deserts, through mountain ranges and eventually into places where you could end your trip with shredding a serious ski trail, with real snow. There are a myriad of opportunities for fun in California and many of them create great job possibilities as well.

The film industry. Massive produce farms. Golf and resorts. The brain trusts of San Francisco. The heart of political activism in Berkley. A fantastic state school system--the University of California has campuses peppered throughout many different counties and is one of the most highly-respected of all state systems in the U.S. California is a progressive state--perhaps its history as the goal of American pioneers looking for the golden land during the Gold Rush and during the "Go West, Young Man" periods has manifested itself in a present-day world where the most liberal of ideas and minds enact legislation that affects the rest of the country. It is an important deal maker and deal breaker--California encompasses all careers and livelihoods and its beautiful shores still beckon adventuresome jobseekers to this day.

  • Florida  ( 8 items )

Florida has the Walt Disney World resort, alligators, palm trees, perfect beaches on perfect island keys, excellent fishing, swimming, boating, extreme sports, adventure travel, luxury travel, cost-effective travel and Miami. But did you know that Florida is one of the most densely-populated retirement areas in the country? This creates an entirely new branch of income streams--money management, medical care, hospice care, golf and tennis resorts, assisted living facilities--that create a whole new world of employment opportunity.

If you're an engineer and enjoy working on rollercoasters, not only will you find WDW in the state, but also Universal in Orlando, Busch Gardens in Tampa, Sea World and Discovery Cove, where people can actually swim with dolphins. Of course, on the western side of the state, if you jump into the surf off the beaches of Tampa-St. Pete or venture out to the Caribbean-like splendor (and shell-collecting frenzy) at the white sand beaches of Sanibel and Captiva Islands or Anna Maria Island, you have the chance to actually swim with dolphins on your own!

Wildlife jobs abound in Florida--yes, Alligator Alley, which spans the waistline of the state, is a popular tourist attraction but Florida, with its many-splendored surf and swamps, takes its animal population seriously and caretakers are needed everywhere. There are many private as well as public, zoo-like locations around the state that need experienced veterinarian care, not to mention places like Sea World, which requires well-instructed divers, trainers and entertainers to work with and for the sea mammals which play a big part in their tourist attractions.

Whether you're a boat captain running day excursions, a fisherman looking for that big fish to catch and sell, or just a tourist at a resort looking for the catch of the day, Florida has the big and little of everything you could possibly want in one state. Take a look!

  • Hawaii  ( 14 items )

The 50th state of the U.S. is arguably its most beautiful and exotic. Located in the South Seas, home to one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Hawaii is the birthplace of surfing and the hula and it was formerly a real royal kingdom. The six islands of Hawaii make up one of the youngest geological formations in the world and the crater formed by the volcano at Haleakala is the size of the entire island of Manhattan. The generous spirit of the islands is called ALOHA and it perfectly represents the over all feeling of happiness, warmth and pride in its history and experiences that Hawaii conveys to all its travelers. It is one of the most successful tourism sites in the world--the state itself--and the activities it creates are some of the most exciting and memorable in all the world.

Hawaii's natural beauty has encouraged many a resort to set up shop on one of its amazing islands. Every major luxury chain in the world is represented here and many boutique resorts are unique to the island as well. Tourism is the main way of making money in Hawaii--and why not? Who doesn't want to go there? If you've ever been privileged enough to enjoy its palm trees, trade winds, soft sand beaches and majestic waves, as well as its mountainous terrain, its pineapple plantations, its luaus and other cultural celebrations, you know what we're talking about--it is paradise, sweet and simple.

Hawaii also boasts an excellent university system. These institutions may seem at odds with the generally "good time", aloha atmosphere but there are bustling trade centers and other business opportunities alive and well here, too. Transportation, adventure travel, extreme sports (like cliff jumping and hang-gliding), fantastic sailing, unique fashion design . . . all of these things come together to not only offer the tourist a great chance at memorable vacation activities or souvenirs but also offer the jobseeker a chance to ply their business, creative or social trade in one of the most beautiful surroundings in the world. Not a bad place to start out a job search. Let's see what's out there for you.

  • Caribbean  ( 29 items )

Barbados. Tortuga. St. John. Little Dix. Virgin Gorda. Cuba. Turks and Caicos. Anguilla. Puerto Rico. There are so many islands in the Caribbean that it's hard to name them all. But suffice it to say that tourism is the most important trade plyed throughout the Caribbean Sea. Luxury resorts abound, with amazing amenities--world-class chefs making amazing meals with the rich array of fresh food available; tennis courts and golf courses created by famed stars of the games, with gorgeously manicured lawns and the best in facilities management; pools that come out of a dream, infinity pools looking out over the vast ocean beyond, a most romantic and relaxing sight indeed. The Caribbean islands have long been thought of as some of the most beautiful places on the planet and, with that beauty, comes a long line of employment opportunities needed to keep it that way.

Ecology and environmental protection are key in the Caribbean islands. In fact, there are many rainforests and preserved lands dotted throughout the chain of islands where fun is the name of the game. Even while enjoying the adventure sports and spa packages offered by most hotels, tourists can have access to amazing wildlife and flora and fauna, some of which isn't seen anywhere else in the world. In fact, on islands like Belize, eco-tourists can sign up to take care of the Galapagos Turtles and, on St. John, the Maho Bay Eco-Resort is partially run by those who are staying there for vacation. On the more serious side, all this wildlife needs actual scientific and medical help as well as funding for preservation so there are many career opportunities available here beyond the sporting and spa ones.

Of course, the sport and spa part of any vacation is an important one and masseuses, yoga instructors, Pilates teachers, sailing instructors, tour guides are all key figures in the world of Caribbean tourism. And, with each sail out in to the perfect blue ocean or every first-time surfer's initial ride on a big wave, there are people to make sure that the beginning, middle and end of every adventure goes perfectly.

The Caribbean is also a tax shelter for many corporations and world-renowned global industry leaders have headquarters among those islands. There are endless business opportunities in this amazing setting--if you're looking for legal or financial jobs, why not work in paradise? It beats a modern city anyday (and you can have a year-round tan and swim outside all year long, too, so your stress level should be lower than if you were in Tokyo, London or New York!)

  • Canada  ( 41 items )

The U.S.A.'s neighbor to the north is a remarkable country, filled with endless variety of sight, sound and purpose--no matter what you want to do, you can find it in Canada.

In the past century, Canada has become an important part of the manufacturing, mining, and service industries, a big change from their originally rural economy. Canadian economic health is created by three important industries: logging, oil production and agriculture. There are not many developed nations that export any kind of energy, making Canada an anomaly amongst world powers.  It has vast offshore deposits of natural gas and substantial petroleum deposits as well. Alberta holds most of the gas resources in the country.  Canada actually has the world's second largest oil reserves, next to Saudi Arabia. In Quebec, British Columbia, Newfoundland & Labrador, New Brunswick, Ontario and Manitoba, ecologically-efficient and cost-effective hydroelectric power is the most important source of renewable energy. As the energy crisis heats up around the world, Canada is primed to be a major player in all these areas.

Wheat is the number one agricultural export from Canada. As the world's largest producer of this all-important grain, manufacturing and processing it has become an important part of the economy. Precious metals mining has transformed most of the northern part of the country, where agriculture is not as proficient, and logging and its subsequent logging export are very important matters when it comes to the economic health of the country and its employment opportunities.

However, Canada is a bi-lingual country, filled with ages-old history and culture. It is the hotbed of ice hockey but also boasts amazing variety of landscape across its broad expanse. Skiing, skating, hot air ballooning, sailing on the coasts, long-form train travel--looking for adventure and vacation pleasure takes many a different form across this beautiful country. If you are looking for a place where you can find pretty much any type of lifestyle you can think of, as well as an excellent employment opportunity, this is a country that should place high on your list of places to be and be seen!
